Materials: Strength

By Dr. David R. Roisum

There are many reasons you might want to test tensile strength. First, you may be required to do so by commercial contract. Second, it is commonly perceived to be an indicator of quality.

Web handlers have strong analytical and empirical and practical reasons for measuring tensile strength. The primary is that knowing strength allows us to size, design and operate tension-control systems for our web machines. Also, sometimes strength is an indicator of runnability, as we will describe.
