DWH Technical Topic: Motor selection for pumps
By Clarence Klassen, P. Eng.
An article in IEEE Industry Applications, Vol. 19, No. 6, p.36 titled “Motor Selection Made Easy” by Walter Jones discusses installing motors and Variable Speed Drives (VSD) for pump applications. It describes pump types and characteristics. The most common are centrifugal pumps.
Five examples show considerations in selecting the motor power and RPM so that adequate flow and pressure are maintained. Overload requirements for the motor are also discussed. The energy savings possible with VSDs are included.\
Note: I have known of Walter Jones for my entire career having worked for the same company in the 1980s and attended his lectures at IEEE events.
