Specialty papers and paperboard demand for packaging, labeling apps to grow 3.5% CAGR to 2025: AWA study

With a global growth of 1.5% in 2022, worldwide demand for specialty papers and paperboard in all end-use applications is expected to grow 2% CAGR to 2025, according to a just-released study by Amsterdam-based AWA Alexander Watson Associates.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent supply-chain disruptions, many paper producers have had to face shortages in the supply chain, leading to increased prices in the paper market, the report says. Though pulp prices have come down, they remain above pre-COVID prices. Despite this, the fastest growth is expected within the packaging and labeling markets with a 3.5% CAGR to 2025 (above), followed by foodservice at 3.0%.

The new study looks at the more than 300 companies globally in this industry, which includes both many of the largest pulp and paper companies, as well as very small companies operating one paper mill, and with just one small paper machine.
